Sneak Attack by MikeDoscher Sneak Attack by MikeDoscher
The Alliance fleet caught napping, an intrepid German raider makes their escape. The Charlemagne damaged and the USS Longstreet in flames, the Saturnine March would be ruled by neither crown. Mars grows hotter.

Something new. I wanted a painting for Spacecraft of the First World War to have a battle scene that looked more like a flight to the Sabbat. I'm constructing my paintings a little differently these days.

The strength of this work is that the action is plain, even if it were blurred even further. Not seen is a plain sense of surprise or chaos, though the position of the defending ships' relative to the attacking one does imply such.

Certainly, though, the color scheme and the softness of the brushstrokes suggests a theme common to WWI-inspired works: a depiction of war as being grim, grimy, and filled with spectacular, if violent, deaths. Perhaps, then, it is best that the sense of surprise is so vague; for if there was shown a panicking defender or a proud attacker, the audience could find in them a hero or a villain. In leaving humans out of this piece, this duality is removed, since fire, smoke, and machinery have no morals, let alone emotions. Any suppositions of "good" and "bad" are in fact imposed upon by the audience, not preached. Again, a defining theme of WWI-inspired work.

The plane is a neat touch, but it's unclear if it has any symbolic or narrative meaning. It also seems HUGE. Seriously though, great job.

Do you know, I can see you doing something along the lines of the "The Fighting Temeraire". An old dreadnought of the First World War being hauled to her final resting place (the scrapyards on the moon?) by a more modern spacecraft of Venusian design? In the distance an red giant casting a massive orange glow onto a cloud of charged particles... www.nationalgallery.org.uk/ser…
