I decided to take the original model and push it a bit further. The background isn't quite there yet, and there's a great deal to do in Photoshop yet (markings, smoke and light effects, etc.) but I thought I'd show it at this point to give a clearer picture of the process. The muzzle flashes are just alpha-mapped and self-illuminated textures. I really don't care for particles in 3ds Max at all- I can see why that sort of work is done in post production instead so much of the time.
The gun is a smart gun/MG42/Oerlikon lovechild, yes.
I thought I would rifle through your work and see what treasures I may have missed, this is one of them! Love the lighting and effects, the design also is really nice.
I like how you made a couple of the joints at unusual points in the robot's "anatomy", and decided to give the gun unusually-placed handles and ammo. Really good stuff - inspiring!
The model looks great, but it could use some texturing, maybe just vertex painting with some lighter color for the worn-out corners.
I would say that since it's an image you could just paint the particle effects in Photoshop or use a 2D particle program.
Personally I love 3D particle systems but it takes too long to render even simple effects in Max while I can easily see them in real-time in the Unreal Engine 3, like so [link]
this is amazing e.e
