This is the final design for the exterior of the submarine in the short film 'Fathoms'.

There's a blog about it here: [link]

When will the film be completed?

Great work, by the way.

Thanks. I don't really know when it'll be out, but it was the subject of a successful Kickstarter campaign, and the project has a blog up here: [link]

Oh yeah, I was looking around on there, but I couldn't find anything about that.

I suspect that the release date will be one of those Valve-style 'when it's done and cool' kinds of deals. Dunno, it's been awhile since I talked to the guy.

I only model in POV-Ray...and have never been able to do anything close to this level of detail; it's a very...manual process. But every thing you put up makes me want to try, both the sketches and the rendered stuff. Your designs are just incredible.

Just out of curiosity, what's the scale of this thing? Or maybe I should just go look at the cutaways... ;)

I'm happy you find my work inspiring. I would encourage you to try your hand at modeling if you feel the desire. In some ways, vehicles and manmade environments are the easiest. They do tend to have a lush complexity to them, but it tends to involve a lot of repetition and be reducible to simple forms. The 'Arken' herself is at heart a collection of cubes that have been tapered and chamfered, with the cargo container, cockpit, and engines dominating the form. Don't let the details that are added afterward intimidate you.

The scale of the 'Arken' is something that was never put to paper as a concrete number, and will probably be a bit elastic on screen for purposes of drama and composition. I would estimate that she is about 80-90 feet long, or the length of two school buses or so.

hi hi

I looked through the concept art for this, including all the interior spaces. Absolutely brilliant and fantastic. I just hope they didn't ask you to plan out the plumbing systems in detail :P

Very Epic design, I love it much. I wanna sail the seas on it. If I may ask, is it a short or medium range submersible? Like one, five days at the most? Or is it like an extended voyage vessel which stays out months on end to find and pick at all the nifties on the bottom of the sea?

From the script I read, it's the latter.
