Palace of the Engines by MikeDoscher Palace of the Engines by MikeDoscher
This is the completed version of the sketch I posted earlier today. --> mikedoscher.deviantart.com/art...

Something mysterious happens when I draw: It’s as if the story is being dictated to me by voices unknown. I can’t draw without a story, and I can’t write without a picture. I draw the Etongi citadel, and I can hear the dripping of water and the rumble of suspicious machinery. It all becomes as real as a memory, and for a brief span I’m able to write down what I see.

Thank you, yes I have. :) It's nice to see it again though. I don't think it was a *direct* influence on the Palace of the Engines, but I can't say for sure.

Certainly has the elements needed to be on the edge of a steampunk architectural fantasy. You've got the gears and pipes. Heck, maybe those aren't guns at all. Maybe they're telescopes. For spying. Or fun.

The large ones are telescopes. Only the single mount to the left and the light twin mount to the right are guns. The Observatory Tower is mostly that, tracking distant stars to predict changes in the fabric of the Iron Road. Heheh, the novel should be on Kindle by Christmas. :)

It looks even better colored! :) Thanks for sharing, love all the details.  Sounds like your powers of visualization are pretty strong, Bobby Chiu talks a lot about developing that skill...

Anti-Aircraft weapons I suspect.

The emplacements to the middleground left and to the right of the tower are dual purpose pneumatic guns. They could be used against aircraft, but the likelihood of keeping an aircraft flying in the vicinity of the Iron Road is small. The turbulent nature of reality there is the reason for pneumatic weapons rather than more efficient chemical propellants. Fire control would also be rather lousy against something moving that fast, as well.

inspired by Otomo's animation "Cannon Fodder"?

Not consciously, but who can say? "Cannon Fodder" was superb. This is a revision of something that was originally a mix of Bruegel's 'Tower of Babel' and Tatlin's 'Monument to the Third International'. Though with this revision, there's a lot more Gormenghast in there.
