Iron Twilight by MikeDoscher Iron Twilight by MikeDoscher
Strange and old, skimming along in the light of a guttering moon, they pressed ahead. How many times has this scene been repeated, with different actors playing out the same trepidation and desperate hope across ten million worlds?

I've taken to sketching before I go to sleep and just as I wake up. This is a piece of bruised fruit harvested from that tree.

Very intresting dieselpunk concept vehicle.
Awesome "teutonic" style design...well how btw would Sd Kfz 223 look converted to a dieselpunk design?

I don't know why I didn't see this before. The ship design inspired by a German AT-halftrack, the Sd.Kfz. 251/22?

Yeah, kind of a mix between that and the Sd.Kfz 250/10, but it's a pretty sloppy mix of stuff overall.

Looks like some Sd.Kfz. 231 6-wheeler in there as well =)
I love those angles. ^^ I have it in my too-doo-folder; draw something with those shapes. You beat me too it. :o

Hehe, awesome! I have a bunch of flying-APC sketches kicking around, based on the same German machines...I could never find a system of hover nodes/jets/what-have-you that was as satisfying as wheels and tracks, design-wise. The closest I came was a system of fins/skid-plates/skiis, kind of like what you've done on the back of this one. I like the camo job and what looks like twin superchargers. Nice!

Thanks. :) Hey, have you ever seen the screw drive [link] or some of the crazy wheels they used on the Radschlepper Ost [link] ?

I have seen the screw drive! Fordson tractors, and some crazy Russian tundra vehicles.
Funny you should mention that...I have a design in the works (thumbnails etc) and have not finished yet...Arctic exploration vehicle with an alternate future/russian twist. Basically a Soviet-era bus/train on screw drives. I probably won't upload until I've actually finished something.
Thanks for the links. One of those military tractors reminds me of photos I once saw of a 1930 Ford that had been converted into a tractor/farm vehicle--it had metal strap "spokes" welded to the wire wheels to expand the diameter of the wheels by almost double, with a large metal hoop to serve as the new wheel. Pretty gnarly imagineering on the builder's part :D
Also (!!) there are some vehicles on that site that I've never seen before, like the german semi-submersible gunboat. On the subject of boats, ever heard of the ekranoplan? Incredibly ugly--and fascinating.

I'd seen the ekranoplan. The Lun class seems to be a very interesting solution to a unique problem: Cold War deterrence on the Black Sea. You couldn't reliably use such a thing on the open ocean, but it's perfect for dealing with the border with Turkey, and keeping the NATO installations there from feeling too secure.

Reminds me a little of Prometheus, was that your inspiration or is the comparison just coincidence?

I haven't seen Prometheus yet, so it'd have to be coincidence. :)

i really like the fact that it looks like a WW2 Flak track vehicle,i think the lettering is 'Sdk-Fz Flakk' or something like this.Basic German AA platform on tracks.
Any inspiration come from that or is it just coincidence?
Looks great though, your works is always inspiring

Oh yeah. :) I was messing around with shapes derived from the Sd. Kfz. 250 and 251. They did this interesting thing where the plates that made up the hull were welded together at angles to give the hull rigidity. Can't seem to get it off my mind.

i love the half-track as well...It just spits 'rigid' to me because of the shape. Its great i think that you use real vehicles to really settle your designs in real life instead of going crazy with the shapes.

Perspective and lighting on the rocket thruster closest us is way off - it looks as though it's basically side-on.

Otherwise it's good!

The perspective is fine - that rocket engine is clearly not designed for pushing the craft forwards and instead looks like it is for straffing or turning movements. Since this craft doesn't have wings it stands to reason that it would need a way of changing its direction.

I get what they're for, but I would have shifted the perspective of the image to a slightly different angle, to avoid drawing the engine directly parallel to the screen, which doesn't quite fit here.

It's also got super bright highlights as though it's being hit by a bright light coming from where our eye is. This lighting isn't consistent with the lighting on the rest of the vehicle, which also makes it look a bit out of place.

Fixing the highlights would probably make the side-on-perspective much less noticable.

I'd also add highlights to the most distant edges to show the light from that sun in the background actually hitting the craft.

Keep it up!

You're right, really. :) Mostly this is just a sketch I experimented on. The highlights are definitely too hot. A gentle bounce glow from a cloud bank might be more appropriate.
