Drillship Sketch by MikeDoscher Drillship Sketch by MikeDoscher
Sketch of a design for a new personal project I'm working on. It's a working boat, mostly designed for extracting subsurface liquid resources on rocky worlds with low-gravity to microgravity environments. Sort of a flying oil well.

Such a cool concept! Love all the tiny details that give it that great sci-fi feel.

I love how your industiral ships do have the clunky, rough industrial feel to them, as they rightly should.

I've been toying with the idea of some more vertical ships, and this does show how to pull one off in a superb way.

Nice. Reminds me of those massive dragline excavators used in open-cast mining. Like a previous poster, I imagine it with a flaky construction-yellow paintjob. Oh, and big corporate logos on the large flat surfaces.

looks great, but since the engines are only mounted on the back, it would have no way of stabilizing or stopping itself in the vacuum of space or microgravity environments.

Do you know how much beer that could hold? :O_o:

I'm sure it's a good liquid miner, but if you paint one up in a sports team's colors and have it at the game.......

Cool design, hope the project goes well:w00t:

Awesome concept! I'm curious as to what the drill would look like. And what RPM would the drill spin at? o:

Another cool concept.
I'm assuming the vertical orientation is to accommodate a retractable drilling shaft?

Yes. The top section is slid back via a hydraulic ram and moving into the vertical position when the ship is set up for drilling.

Nothing beats a concept that's well thought out --which you're expert at! ;)

Going to color?
I see this as either construction yellow, or weathered (alien style) metallic. Either way, will look cool all rusty and asteroid battered, w/ flashy landing lights and such. Would enhance sense of scale. :D

Yes. Additionally, I'll be doing a scaled-up cutaway as well. I'll be doing a series of ship designs for a possible book pitch.

Music to my ears! :music: I know you're an ace w/ the cutaways.
Already looking forward to it. I'd publish yer ass in a heartbeat if I could.

verry interesting in design, I am guessing it is for mineing and excavation. whats its crew capacity?

Not mining, but drilling: Methane and other hydrocarbons for fuel and manufacturing needs. Just a couple people could probably fly and land it, but it would typically use about a dozen for normal operations, including operating the remote storage bunkers and telepresence rigs for the drill heads.

ahha, whats its fule sorce, I like going in to technical detail with my ideas, and like your stuff, anyways
on the sides it seems to actually land on the serface, and grip down on to it, what are those "arms" for, interesting design, whats it fer?

Fusion reactor. I haven't decided if I want to go with magnetic or laser containment yet. It's the box between the two upper thrusters, adapted from an off-the-shelf commercial model.
