Construction Ship Cutaway WIP by MikeDoscher Construction Ship Cutaway WIP by MikeDoscher
This is a progress shot of part of a personal project, going under the name 'Working Boats of the Outer Planets'. This is a mining/construction vessel called the 'Turbary Celt'. The cutaway view is reasonably far along, and I've sketched in some rough indications where the text and additional art will go. This first spread is more of a feasibility study, but I'm hoping to get this project published someday. I'm aiming for a fusion of the Steven Biesty cross-section books with more of David Macauley's humor and sense of narrative, as well as the immersive 'in character' feel of the old Terran Trade Authority books.

Oh, if you download the image you can see it twice as big as fullview, which might show you more detail.

Excellent work as usual. Were you planning on developing this as a pure 2D story/design or maybe 3D?

I think I'll probably just keep this whole project 2D, though I'm considering exploring 3D renders that have been reworked in Photoshop.

Thank you, I'm very happy that you think so highly of my work. You can get a long ways with it by looking at things from real life. Practical considerations dictate that most mechanical stuff is laid out in a particular way, with variations. Construction equipment is full of ideas for details on mechs, as are tanks. Aircraft and ships are good sources of ideas for details on spacecraft. What look like a lot of detail may also be thought of as a large collection of relatively simple shapes.

Extremely well done as usual, I love your style and your attention to detail, I wish I could do concept art like that for my models.

Awesome detail, man. You're one of my favorite mecha designers on dA, so even a quick initial draft like this is pretty astounding.

An observatory comment: one massive advantage of drawing in this view is allowing you some liberty (avoidance) from the other identical faces that are pointing away from you, something I call "symmetry in perspective." At least for myself, it's not really fun to create the same object twice in a perspective view, so if you can hide it so that you only have to draw it once, you can spend more time thinking about the concepts rather than the analysis.

Am I the only one who immediately saw a dick and balls in the top left corner? Sorry to bring this down but I had to tell someone. As for the ship, it looks really good :)

Hahahhaha! XD If my junk looked like that I'd go to the doctor. Yeah, there's something... unfortunate about the shape though.

No, it's a common vice for hastily drawn spacecraft laid out this, though. A long fuselage with a round engine on either side is asking for trouble on *some* level, really.

Reminds me of the part in Death to Smoochy where Robin William's character sabotages the kid's show with penis cookies, but Edward Norton improvises and calls them rocketship cookies.
