Concept Rendering Process by MikeDoscher Concept Rendering Process by MikeDoscher
This is not really a tutorial, so much as an explanation of how I find myself working these days. I’d like to start doing some tutorials/explanations of how I work and how I come up with designs in case in might be of use to someone. I will probably expand this description soon, but I wanted to get it out there before the end of my vacation.

Downloading the full sized image should show the steps better.

Is it wrong that I thought this mecha was holding a coffee cup when I saw it in my thumbnails?

Great tips - impossible to match your skills!... but great tips anyway!

Awesome design! Kind of like a cross between ED-209 and the MACII-Monster from Robotech. Love it!

It's a treat to see how you work (even better in person, though). =)

Watch out, that's a stickybomb launcher there. One wrong step, and boom.

Yeah, that's actually loaded with concussion grenades to keep enemy infantry cautious. Dangerous to a rifleman, but not so much to an armored vehicle.

I wanted to get into digital colouring of my drawings for a while now, but it always seemed so difficult. You broke it down so much, that I feel like an idiot now for not seeing these simple steps before :P

Don't feel like an idiot! I was in the same boat for the longest time. :)

(Of course, I *am* an idiot, but for totally different reasons. Just ask my exes.)

Cool!! :la: Thanks for sharing, man. So, you start with a gestural sketch, and then refine it into line work, and after that you paint the base tones and continue into the details?

I'll definitely check out any tutorials you post in the future. Mechanical design can be a daunting goal, and seeing how a successful artist comes up with designs can really help beginners. :-)

Pretty much as you say, yeah. Hopefully soon I'll have something put together on when to get ideas and how to combine stuff from different sources to make something new. I'm glad you liked it.
