Bomber Dev Sketch 01 by MikeDoscher Bomber Dev Sketch 01 by MikeDoscher
This is a developmental sketch for a combination atmospheric and space bomber for my 'Spacecraft of the First World War' project.

The final version will be a full color plate in the book. Details to follow.

Technical pencil with slight digital cleanup.

Looks kind of like something Hayao Miyazaki might have drawn.   I like this kind of future-retro look.

Thanks. I wasn't thinking consciously of him, but there's a fair amount of the gunship from Nausicaa in this one, especially in the wingtip shapes.

at first glance i thought it was an A-10 thunderbolt II, aka the warthhog. www.badassoftheweek.com/wartho…

You and me both. I was kinda disappointed since the 'ole Hog is my favorite machine of war of all time, but this is really cool.

the warthog is basically a flying cannon capable of firing 30 30mm sabot rounds per second strapped to a flying tank equipped with heavy armor and hellfire and maverick ATGM missiles.

It's why I fell in love with it on first sight.

...but isn't ATGM missile redundant?

compared to the GAU-8 avenger 30mm gatling chain gun? yeah, kinda.

Wasn't exactly what I meant, but in retrospect that works, too.

Also, I remember a story where in the Gulf War, a pilot had his A-10 nearly shot to pieces. It was missing an engine, half of it's left wing and had fuel tanks full of bullet holes. He didn't notice the full extent of the damage till he climbed out of the cockpit. Apparently, he said it still flew fine.

It's one of several reasons I wanna get inside the cockpit of one. Nothing excites me more than the prospect of flying one of those fork tailed devils and blowing sh*t up.

Space bombers that look like WW1 biplanes, ha ha love it!! :) Question, Mike, is a technical pencil a mechanical pencil of some kind?

Oh, yes. In this case it is, though I'm not sure if my description is technical correct. It's really just a 0.5 mm mechanical pencil.

The thing looks gorgeous... but is it flying to the left or the right? If it's to the right, I keep getting the feeling it's just going to do backflips and crash.

Thanks. It's going from the left to the right, and once I have the engine contrails in place it should look a bit more plausible.

You have a gifted technical pencil hand. How little is little digital clean up? This angle makes it a little hard to tell but this looks like a spin on the biplane prop. Is that correct?

Thanks. Mostly just levels to remove paper noise and a quick layer of flat gray.

The composition of the final image will be close to the thumbnail top left of center here: titancity.tumblr.com/image/656… You're viewing it from the top, and it's an evolution of early aircraft design with the introduction of some very peculiar other technologies.
