6X6 Rapid Assault Vehicle 28mm Miniature by MikeDoscher 6X6 Rapid Assault Vehicle 28mm Miniature by MikeDoscher
Late last year I had the opportunity to take one of my vehicle concepts and adapt it for production as a 28mm wargaming miniature. These should be shipping soon from Secret Weapon Miniatures. Link ==> [link]

3d prototyping is evolving rapidly. It's like the same sort of thing that happened with printing technology in the late 1990s, only with the ability to create real objects.

brb, downloading a car. :P

Just thought I'd let you know, seeing as how I've stumbled across your gallery here on dA, that I bought one of these from Justin last year. I know he's re-mastered the mould since then for a more logical assembly, but I was still really impressed - just a shame it's so expensive to import them here in the UK, or I'd order another three! It's only part-painted and waiting for me to get around to finishing it, but I'll post a pic up here and send you a link when it's done.

Thank you for your support. :) I'd love to see how it looks when you've got it painted up.

Wow! Those would make great proxies for the wheeled vehicles in my AT-43 Oni army. :D (I'm sure I could find plenty of RPG uses as well.) I love the DETAILS!

Nice, the light cover looks like German WWII design.

This would be a great model to "count as" a Leman Russ or a Hellhound. The apparent lack of doors would prevent it from being used as a Chimera, though.

It does have infantry doors on the rear, kind of like the BMP. It might not be an ideal stand-in for the Chimera, but you can do some interesting crossbreeding with the Leman Russ, as the turret pin is the same size.

I have seen a couple of these painted up. I must say, this is probably my favourite vehicle design in production right now.

That's so inspiring, seeing your 3D work being made into a real creation.

Do you get any profit from it when someone buys the kit? Will you be doing more?

For this first kit, we did a deal where all the money was upfront, just to take a conservative line and see how things did. I'll be working on at least one more model for them, albeit a smaller one.

You think you can manage to print out your ship designs that way? Hell, maybe even get some simple rules dropped out and make a Battlefleet Gothic type of game ?

Thanks. I might be able to do something like that someday, but the 3D print quality is still not quite up to snuff as it comes straight from the printer. The masters end up needing quite a bit of sanding to make a really nice mold. I think I'm most likely to to do vehicles and figures at a more typical scale, at least until we see one more iteration of the printing tech.

Great, as a Warhammer 40k player (sort of) I really like that design. Good chances, I'm going to get one of those. I'll plug you in on some of the W40k forums I attend.

I hope you get orders for more vehicles. I like your designs.

Nice. Which software did you use to model in 3D? I'm using Solidworks lately.

Thanks. I used 3ds Max 2009 for these, as well as a little program whose name I forget to check the integrity of the .dae files. I think I'll experiment with Sculptris when I mess with more organic stuff.

I tried sculptris but never got the hang of it... for organic shapes I always used blender. For engineering (of sorts) I'm used to Solidworks, even if it's more engineering than art, I find it easy to use if you know how to do it.

Thanks for the answer, anyway :)

Well done! If you know will it be resin or plastic? I can see this being used in a number of rulesets such as warpath and scaled up stargrunt 2. I wish I knew of a game with realistic rules for representing vehicles though; warhammer 40k (which most of my gamer community plays) rules suck at this...
